Dr. Bennet received his Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Kansas, then obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1990. His internship and residency in Internal Medicine were completed at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. His fellowship in Gastroenterology was done at the University of Colorado HSC hospitals. Dr. Bennet is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, The American Gastroenterological Association and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Bennet is affiliated with Inova Fairfax and Fair Oaks hospitals. He has a special interest in inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome. The role of diet in the treatment of intestinal tract diseases is of particular interest. Dr. Bennet was the director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Outcome Center at the University of Colorado, in Denver, Colorado from 1996 until his move to Washington D.C. in 1999.

Gastroenterology services offered include diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy to diagnose and treat conditions of the colon, esophagus, stomach and small intestine. Dr. Bennet also offers services concerning the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the liver (liver biopsy) biliary system and pancreas.
